ichoosemyplace.com.au was invented when two friends with disability talked about being housemates. They would have made perfect housemates!
Apart from being great friends, they understood each other’s needs, like the need for a support worker to visit the house or the weird sleeping habits the other person had.
At the of 34, I really wanted to start living independently from my parents, knowing that I would still need support. My friend already lived by himself with drop-in support but was lonely, wanting a housemate “to share the load of rent, someone to talk to, hang out with and someone to look after the place when I was on holidays”.
Our only issue was that we lived too far apart from each other and neither one of us was comfortable leaving the areas we lived in because of our existing circle of supports; families, friends, doctors etc.
So how could we meet our goal of sharing a place?
I invented ichoosemyplace.com.au, a website designed for people with and without a disability to both search for accommodation and to advertise for housemates. For safety and support, you are strongly encouraged to have your circle of support help you through the process. You can also check out the ‘Sharing a house rights and responsibilities’ and ‘Keeping you safe contacts’ posters.
Please email us if you have any questions or concerns.
iChoosemyplace.com.au is all about helping you to find where you want to live and who you want to live with.
We have produced some posters that you can use to help keep safe and happy!
